How Do I Get ChatGPT to Recommend My Business?
Make your business easy for ChatGPT to find, trust and quote: answer pages, consistent facts, proof and an llms.txt. Here's how, and how to test it.
Make your business easy for ChatGPT to find, trust and quote. That means a page that answers each question your customers ask, prices included. The same business facts everywhere online. Real proof, like reviews and credentials. And an llms.txt file that hands AI your answers in plain text. Then test it every month by asking ChatGPT the questions your customers ask. Most businesses start near zero, so the first fix brings a big jump, and we usually see it within two weeks.
How do I know if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Ask it. Open ChatGPT and type the question your customer would:
"Which [type of business] near [your city] can help with [what your customer needs]? Compare three options and explain why."
Either you're named or someone else is. Write down who. Then ask the same question in Gemini and Perplexity, because each one answers differently.
What's the difference between being cited and being recommended?
A citation is a small source link at the bottom of an answer. A recommendation is when the answer tells the customer to call you. Only the second one brings in customers.
Here's how big that gap is. Last week, ChatGPT used our website 189 times to answer people's questions. Only 4 of those people clicked through. The citation isn't the prize. The recommendation is.
Why does ChatGPT recommend some businesses and not others?
It recommends the businesses whose answers it can find and trust.
People don't ask AI the way they search Google. On Google they type about three words: "med spa Irvine." In ChatGPT they type about twenty-three and describe the whole situation. The AI answers their question first, then names the businesses that gave it the answer. If your answer isn't on the internet, someone else's is.
How many people actually use ChatGPT to find a business?
Almost half. Last year, 6% of US consumers asked an AI tool to recommend a local business. This year, 45%. Nearly 1 in 3 asked ChatGPT itself. That's from BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 US adults.
They didn't leave Google. Only 2% use AI as their only way to search. They added a new place to ask, and on that channel there is no page two.
What is an llms.txt file, and do I need one?
It's a plain text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt that tells AI who you are, what you do, where, what it costs, and the answers to your customers' questions. Yes, we think you need one.
The internet was built for humans, to read webpages. The new internet is being built for AI agents, to interact with companies. An agent wants the answer fast, in plain words, and llms.txt is the fastest path to it. Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt. We've seen the opposite: when our clients put a good one in place, their AI numbers jump.
A good one does six things:
- Says what you do, who it's for, and where, one sentence each.
- Lists every core service, with a one-line answer and a link to its page.
- Answers your top 10 buying questions, price ranges included.
- Points to your proof: reviews, licenses, credentials and examples.
- Stays current when your prices, services or hours change.
- Comes from one source of truth, so it never disagrees with your website.
To draft one, ask ChatGPT: "Read my website at [your website]. Write an llms.txt file that explains my business to AI assistants: who we are, what we offer, where we serve, what it costs, and answers to the questions customers ask most." Fix anything that's wrong, save it as llms.txt, and upload it next to your homepage.
What should I publish so ChatGPT can answer my customers?
One page per question your customers really ask. The title is the question, word for word. The first sentence is the answer. Then the details, including what it costs. You don't have to publish your price book: give ranges, and say what's included.
Skip the generic posts. "Seven ways to get ready for summer" takes AI two seconds to write, for you and every competitor. What AI can't make up is what your business actually knows.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
The first jump usually comes within two weeks. For one client we built an AI Brain for, AI citations went up about 1,000% in the first two weeks.
That number sounds unreal because they started near zero. Fixing that is a repair, and repairs show up fast. After that, growth slows down but keeps climbing, because every answer you publish is one more page AI can find.
How do I track whether it's working?
Run the same test every month. Pick the ten questions a customer asks before they hire someone like you, and ask ChatGPT those same ten. For each one, write down whether you were named, who was named instead, and which website the answer came from. Named in two of ten this month and four of ten next month means it's working.
Keep your evidence separate. AI reading your pages, AI citing you, people clicking, AI recommending you and customers calling are five different numbers. The one that pays is the recommendation.
Will ChatGPT ads make ChatGPT recommend me?
No. Ads appear separately from the answer, labeled as sponsored. Paying for them doesn't change who ChatGPT recommends. That part you earn.
Can someone check this for me?
Yes. My AI Search Visibility Report runs 20 questions your customers actually ask through ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, and shows whether you're named, recommended or cited, and who shows up instead. It also checks what AI needs from your website, llms.txt included, and gives you a ranked list of fixes in plain words.
It's normally $200. For the first few people I know, it's $5. It runs through Upwork, so you'll need a free Upwork account. You'll have your report and strategy plan about one day after I have your website address.
